Board Swappin’ Good Times
Side Slippin packed the 77′ Dodge “VANDOG” and headed to Patagonia’s Summer Swap meet where plenty of crusty, clean and new shred crafts and salty crew met to poke, talk and get inspiration from one another at the Torquay store, featuring a veggie patch out the front, so organic.
Napalm had been very busy crafting his custom body surf handplanes in the lead up to the day, which nearly ended in divorce, but was well worth the effort laid out with a new 6’4” Hull, 9’6” Log and art works by Stubby & Brodie Jackson.
The response was really positive with many inquisitive crew asking questions about the handplains like “what’s the best waves to ride them”, “who rules on these things” and “what are these for”, which were happily answered promptly by Napalm and later that evening when Keith Malloy’s new body surfing movie, Come Hell or High Water, was screened to a packed audience hydrated by Mount Goat beers.
The advanced simplicity of body surfing illustrated in Keith’s movie is a real eye-opener not only to the forgotten art but first and foremost the stoke that can come out of taking on a couple little shories or charging hollow tubes.. Get out there and paddle slide.

The afternoon board swap was a great opportunity to hang out with like minded people, a huge thanks to Em, Sasha, Claire, Belinda & the Patagonia team for putting on the event, looking forward to the next one!

Northern shred
Sammy from Vanguard has been getting the crew together for this tastie Vanguard clip riding different crafts from thrusters (barrels), logs (nose-riding) and fishes (fat waves). Simple hey? Check out the moving images cheers to Chris Proud.
Santa Cruz CJ Nelson
Nothing like the appreciation of the Australian summer when you see a clip from California, full wetty, cold brown, kelp riddled waters and along comes bright clad CJ Nelson sliding and weaving down the line to the Cramps.
Keithmovie, Boardswap, Punkrock
Napalm (Side Slippin’s Creative Mastermind) has been busy in his garage over the past months designing, crafting, drinking beers, listening to 80′s rock and ending up with an array of killer water riding devices including hulls, logs and both paulonia and foam/fibreglass resin handplanes.
Best thing Patagonia are putting on a boardswap this Saturday, combined with live tunes from Ghostmutt, a few beers and the screening of Keith Malloy’s body surfing film Come hell or high water.
It will no doubt be a good day to buy/swap/research/chat with fellow surfboard enthusiasts, rock out and get inspired, we’ll have our Side Slippin shred crafts down there and by the looks of the forecast Sunday could find some pretty fun waves around Lorne, hope to see you down there.

Garrett’s finless in Bali
Finless surf craft riding is unbelievably unique yet easy to those who have mastered the art of traction free surfing.
Across late November I was lucky enough to share a few mind blowing sessions out at Byron Bay’s Wategoes Beach and The Pass with none other than Derek Hynd himself.
The first session I was riding a longboard picking off a few runners at Wategoes only to see Derek slide, drift and coast straight, sideways and spin in a low crouching, speed efficient ball of style. Mindblowing.
After a friendly introduction and a exchanging a few tales about Victorian surf (classic story I’ll share when I finally develop my film) he talked me through what seems to be his original 13 something channelled, dinged up, no legrope, modified, front and back foot pads and general physics of his craft and later let me have a quick shred, it went like nothing I’d ever dreamt of.
Derek’s impact on surfing across the world has been prolific in the further development of the creative expression that surfing, in it’s purest form is. Introducing ideas & excitement, both in shaping and riding, that many had maybe touched on in the past but not mastered. Derek is a master, and a damn friendly, stoke-filled bloke.
This stoke inspires others to create also, which is what I was originally going to just talk about until I went on the Hynd tangent, all good.. So introducing this interesting number the fellas over at Bali’s Temple of Enthusiasm made possible with the shaping skills of Chris “Phantom” Garrett made and tested by Salsa.
The craftsmanship looks amazing with the symmetry, extra section of concave/foam taken out of the tail, extra side hips for grip watergrip in the tail but releasable from front weight control, upper channel to funnel the water and more all illustrates the performance shown of Salsa riding both lefts and rights, carving, toobing and grab rail spinning. Rad.
Check out the full story at the Deus Bali Blog and keep creating.

New Adventures
Last year we had a little trip down to Lorne on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, the waves were pumping and the vibes were electric. Thomas Campbell did a doodle on the flyer and I thought it might be a good reminder that we might do another adventure maybe soon to catch and release some stoke.
